A Legacy of Stewardship: Friends of Mill Creek and BlueTriton Brands Canada

In Puslinch, Ontario, the Friends of Mill Creek (FoMC) have been working tirelessly since 1997 to preserve the natural beauty and functionality of the Mill Creek subwatershed. At the heart of this effort is Don McKay, an advocate for environmental protection and a key figure within the organization. With a commitment to fostering ecological restoration and youth education, FoMC and the team at the Grand River Conservation Authority have forged a long-standing partnership with several local residents and community businesses including BlueTriton Brands Canada, that has left a lasting impact on both the community and the environment.

The Mill Creek Stewardship Ranger Program, supported in part the Grand River Conservation Foundation, several local residents and community business including BlueTriton Brands, offers local high school students hands-on experience in natural resource management.

The program, overseen by the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA), allows students to engage in in-stream restoration projects, working on tasks such as fish habitat improvement and stream rehabilitation. This initiative has been crucial in addressing local environmental challenges while providing invaluable educational opportunities for young people.

Reflecting on the program, Don shares, “Our partnership with local community partners including BlueTriton Brands has allowed us not only to maintain but also expand the Mill Creek Ranger Program. BlueTriton’s ongoing financial and educational support has empowered us to create a meaningful impact within the community. Each summer, four students with a team leader have the opportunity to work alongside professionals, gaining experience that shapes their understanding of conservation and instils a passion for environmental stewardship.”

The partnership with local community organizations including, BlueTriton Brands, has been instrumental in scaling Friends of Mill Creek’s efforts. Over the years, BlueTriton has contributed over $181,000, helping fund the program and providing the necessary tools and resources for successful conservation projects. Beyond financial support, BlueTriton Brands Senior Natural Resource Manager, Andreanne Simard is a proud board member of the organization and also engages directly with the students, offering them a tour of the BlueTriton facility to show how businesses can operate with an environmental conscience. This connection has enhanced the students' experience, giving them a holistic view of how corporations can positively contribute to conservation.

Looking to the future, Don and FoMC are determined to grow the program further. “We want to reach more students, take on bigger restoration projects, and continue improving water quality in the watershed,” McKay says. “With local community partners like BlueTriton Brands by our side, we’re confident that we’ll meet these goals and continue creating positive change.”

Friends of Mill Creek and BlueTriton Brands exemplify how community organizations and corporations can come together to drive real, lasting impact. Their collective effort ensures that the Mill Creek subwatershed will remain a vibrant and thriving part of the local ecosystem, safeguarding it for generations to come.
