Ice Mountain® donates 1 million bottles of water to nationwide food banks during holiday season
BlueTriton Brands through its Ice Mountain® 100% Natural Spring Water facility in Michigan recently donated more than 20 semi-truckloads, equivalent to 43,000 cases or one million bottles of water to numerous food banks across Michigan including Food Gatherers in Ann Arbor, Feeding America West Michigan in Comstock Park, Hungry for Christ in Hamilton, Forgotten Harvest in Oak Park, and Greater Lansing Food Bank in Lansing. Water was also donated throughout the United States to Southeast Missouri Food Bank in Sikeston, Missouri and the Greater Chicago Food Depository in Chicago, Illinois. The year-end donations helped support families in need during the holiday season.
BlueTriton has a long-standing relationship with Feeding America; the holiday season donation by BlueTriton Brands also strengthens ties with the Michigan Food Bank Council, which is comprised of regional food banks that serve all of Michigan’s 83 counties.
“Our food bank network is extremely grateful for the recent donation of 20 truckloads of bottled water from Ice Mountain,” said Executive Director of the Food Bank Council of Michigan Dr. Phil Knight. “Access to safe, potable water isn’t always a given due to financial, structural, or quality issues. We don’t always think about the critical role water plays in our daily lives. We drink water every day, but we use the most water through our food. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization, between 2,000 and 5,000 liters of water are needed to produce a person’s daily food intake. Without water, farmers would not be able to grow their crops or feed their animals. Water insecurity equals food insecurity.”
According to the Food Security Council report, in 2019, approximately 1.3 million Michiganders faced food insecurity, over 305,000 of which represented children. While finalized statistics for 2020 are yet to be reported, estimates show that food insecurity increased to approximately 1.9 million people in Michigan, including 552,000 children.
